What is GitHub MCP?
The GitHub MCP server gives AI agents access to your GitHub account. That means agents can search code, repositories, issues, and pull requests, browse and edit repository files and branches, manage issues and pull requests, run GitHub Projects boards, manage collaborators and teams, and track releases, deployments, and security alerts. It works across your repos and organizations, so an AI agent can both answer questions about your code and take action on it.
If you spend time triaging issues, chasing pull request reviews, writing release notes, or digging through repos for the right file, an AI agent can take over a lot of that work. Describe what you need, and your AI agent will handle the issues, pull requests, and code for you.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It’s an open standard that gives AI agents a way to connect to external tools and services. Instead of creating a personal access token or GitHub App, configuring scopes, and writing code against the GitHub API, you connect your GitHub account once. After that, you work in GitHub just by asking your AI agent in plain language.
What you can do with GitHub MCP on Gumloop
Search code, repos, issues, and pull requests
Search for code snippets across repositories, find repos, and search issues and pull requests with GitHub’s own search syntax.
Browse and edit repository files
Get the contents of a file or directory, create or update one or more files in a single commit, and create branches. List commits, tags, and branches to understand a repo’s history.
Manage issues end to end
List, get, create, and update issues, with titles, bodies, state, labels, assignees, and milestones, plus add and read comments. Create and apply labels and track milestones to keep work organized.
Manage and merge pull requests
List, get, create, and update pull requests, request reviewers, read changed files and inline review comments, add comments, and merge with your choice of merge, squash, or rebase.
Run GitHub Projects boards
List and inspect project boards, add or remove issues and pull requests as items, reorder them, and create, update, or delete board fields like Status and Priority.
Manage collaborators and teams
List collaborators, invite or remove them, list organization teams, and look up users, organizations, and user status. Handy for access reviews and onboarding.
Track releases, deployments, and workflows
List releases and get release details, list deployments, and list GitHub Actions workflows to keep an eye on what’s shipping.
Monitor security and repo signals
List Dependabot vulnerability alerts for a repository, and check stargazer counts and lists. Useful for security triage and tracking interest in a project.
How to connect the Gumloop GitHub MCP Server
Create a Gumloop account
Sign up at gumloop.com. Every new account starts with a 14-day free trial.
Add the GitHub MCP server
Copy your MCP server URL from Gumloop and add it to your preferred client (Claude, Cursor, or Gumloop workflows). You'll authorize on first use.
Start using GitHub in your AI workflows
That's it. Your AI agent can now search code, manage issues and pull requests, edit files, and run project boards across your repos. Use it inside a Gumloop automation, in Claude Desktop, or in Cursor.
GitHub MCP use cases
Automated issue triage for engineering teams
An AI agent can search and list new issues, apply labels, set assignees and milestones, and post a clarifying comment, so the backlog stays organized without anyone triaging by hand. New reports land in the right place with the right context.
Pull request review workflows
An agent can list open pull requests, read the changed files and review comments, request the right reviewers, and merge with your chosen method once checks pass. Reviews keep moving without manual chasing.
Release notes and changelogs
Have an agent pull the commits, merged pull requests, and releases since the last tag, then draft clean release notes and post them wherever your team reads them.
Docs and config updates via pull request
An agent can create a branch, update one or more files in a single commit, and open a pull request for review, ideal for routine docs fixes, config bumps, or templated changes across repos.
Cross-platform developer workflows
Combine GitHub with Slack, Linear, and Google Sheets in a single AI agent: post PR and issue activity to a channel, sync issues to your tracker, or log release history to a sheet, all without manual updates.
Why use Gumloop for GitHub MCP
No personal access token, no app setup
Building your own GitHub MCP server means creating a personal access token or GitHub App, configuring scopes, and writing code against the GitHub API. Instead, Gumloop handles all of that for you: click Connect, authorize your GitHub account, and stay connected.
Works with multiple MCP clients
Use the GitHub MCP server endpoint in Claude Desktop, Cursor, or directly inside Gumloop. Same server URL, works with any MCP client.
Chain GitHub with 100+ other integrations
Combine GitHub with Slack, Linear, Google Sheets, and other MCP tools in a single AI agent. Turn issues into tickets, post PR activity to a channel, or log releases automatically.
Enterprise-grade and scalable
Built for teams, with role-based permissions and dedicated support for Pro users. The GitHub MCP respects your existing repository and organization access, so an agent only reaches what your account can.
Start with a free trial
You can test the GitHub MCP integration during Gumloop’s 14-day free trial before committing. Paid plans start at $37/month.
